Madurai: The Madras High Court today dismissed a PIL seeking a direction to the state and central governments on creating a column for writing mother's name in addition to father's in various forms and documents.

Petitioner B Ramkumar Adityan also sought a direction to government officials to accept all forms and applications and certificates without insisting on the signature of the father alone.

He said that giving importance to father alone in various forms and documents of banks, insurance companies, ID cards, etc was not proper in present day situation and circumstances.

He claimed in the last 20 years there had been steady and sizeable increase in the number of single parents.

A division bench of the court's Madurai bench comprising justices S Manikumar and C T Selvam, dismissed the PIL saying sufficient materials had not been provided and the issue could be raised through a writ petition.

The petitioner submitted that several private and public institutions continued to issue forms that required father's name alone, and father to sign as guardian.
