He's been trapped in a Rajasthan tunnel since Thursday

Udaipur: For nearly six days, Narayan has been stuck in a tunnel that caved in while he was at work 40 km from Udaipur.

Narayan was working as a pump operator for Costal India limited. He was helping dig a tunnel for the Dewas water project, meant to steam water via a special pipeline to the lakes in Udaipur city.

When the tunnel caved in on Thursday afternoon, Narayan was inside, approximately 300 ft below the ground.

A 22 metre tunnel will have to be dug to bring Narayan out. By Tuesday evening, authorities had managed around half the distance. Luckily for him, while both ends are blocked and there is no way out, he has 9 metres of free space inside to walk around in.

"Narayan is in communication with the authorities who have lowered a pipe into the tunnel from which they can communicate with him. They are also supplying him with food and water, dry fruits and juice," said a labourer working on the project.

Narayan was hired recently in the job and officials say they do not have even a photograph of him. He is believed to be 40-years-old and a resident of Himachal Pradesh who had been given the job at the work site by a labour contractor.

"Rescue operation is on. Work is under process. It will take time to get the man out. The man has enough food and water, he can spend many days on it. Through a pipe we are in constant touch with him," said the project engineer Chandra Shekhar.
