Just before rush hour, South Mumbai was pounded by rain. At 4 pm, the skies opened up and over the next 90 minutes, 91.7 mm rainfall was recorded - abnormally high.

Trees were uprooted in parts of the city like Santa Cruz and Colaba.

For nearly 15 minutes, runway operations were suspended at the airport. Flights averaged a delay of 45 minutes in landing and take off and three flights were diverted to Ahmedabad.

Local trains were running on schedule. Traffic jams, however, meant an exacting commute home for office-goers.

Heavy rain and thunder storms are predicted over the next 24 hours.
