Gorakhpur: six succumb to Encephalitis; toll reaches 609
Gorakhpur: The encephalitis menace continues unabated in eastern Uttar Pradesh as six more children succumbed to the disease at BRD Medical College Hospital, official sources said in Gorakhpur today.

With the six deaths, which took place over the last two days, the death toll due to the disease has climbed to 609 this year.

The sources in the office of Additional Director (Health) said 23 fresh cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) were detected and the patients admitted to BRD-MCH during the period.

205 patients suffering from AES are being treated at BRD-MCH and different government hospitals of the region, the sources said.

Meanwhile, health check-up of 378 encephalitis-affected children was conducted in a health camp in BRD Medical college yesterday.

They were tested for mental and physical disabilities.

The affected children have been issued health cards through which their treatment will be followed-up, the sources in BRD-MCH said, adding that voluntary agencies like Purvanchal Gramin Seva Samiti and volunteers from St Joseph's College for Women have been involved to keep track of patients and provide them emotional support.
