Mumbai: For nearly five minutes, a woman in a village in Maharashtra is beaten relentlessly by a group of  six men. They then turn to the young man who they found her with in a secluded area and thrash him.

The woman is flung onto the ground by them as blows rain down on her.

The assault, which took place on December 30, reportedly as a case of punishment for the woman being found in a secluded area with a man, was filmed by the gang on a phone and circulated on WhatsApp to shame her in her village, which is in the Latur district.

The video surfaced this month in local media and was reported to the police yesterday. The men belong to a group called Ganimi Kawa' which means "Guerilla Warfare" and claim the right to moral policing.

Three have been arrested; the other three are missing.

Maharashtra Rural Development Minister Pankaja Munde told NDTV, "I will speak to the Superintendent of Police of Latur and ask him to take strict action. This is shocking and no one should be allowed to get away with this. I will also speak to the chief Minister about the incident."
