Elephant kills 16-year-old in West Bengal

Jalpaiguri, West Bengal: A student of class X was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants when the animals strayed into human inhabited areas of Bamundanga tea gardens in Jalpaiguri district, officials said on Thursday.

Officials of Diana Forest Range said 16-year-old Uttam Oraon died on the spot on Wednesday night when an elephant of the herd attacked him.

Protesting against the incident, angry tea garden workers blocked the road and stopped forest officials from visiting the area and demanded compensation and adequate measures to prevent wild animals from straying into human habitations, they said.

Recently, a leopard had entered into the area from the nearby forests and attacked a person.
