E-mail 'crucial proof' in Bahamas death

Gurgaon: An e-mail purportedly sent by Neha Dalal from the ship to her brother before she allegedly killed herself in the Bahamas is a crucial piece of evidence, Gurgaon Police Commissioner SS Deswal said here on Monday.

Neha, allegedly  jumped off a cruise liner in the Bahamas on December 31, complaining of harassment by her husband, Ankit Dalal. The Gurgaon Police had lodged an FIR under Section 498-A (harassment for dowry) IPC against Ankit, his father SS Dalal, his mother and sister on a complaint by Suresh Chhikara, Neha's father.

In the e-mail, Neha had alleged Ankit would beat her up every day on the ship and that she was depressed.

She had also alleged in the e-mail that her husband had threatened to get her appointment in the United States cancelled, according to Neha's family.

"If this e-mail is true and was sent by Neha, it will be a crucial piece of evidence," the Police Commissioner said.

He said the police had already written to the External Affairs Ministry to approach its consulates in Boston and Kingston to seek a report from authorities there on the incident.

Further action would be initiated on the receipt of those reports, he said.

Both Neha's family and the family of her husband live in Gurgaon.
