Dental college student commits suicide

Paonta (Himachal Pradesh): A girl student of a dental college allegedly committed suicide on Monday by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her hostel room here, police said.

Sanmeet Kaur, a student of Himachal Institute of Dental Sciences, allegedly took the extreme step yesterday afternoon for reasons yet to be ascertained, said N S Negi, DSP of Paonta.

Sanmeet, a resident of Bhatinda in Punjab, completed her degree in dental sciences and was due to return home soon, he said.

She had complained of a headache on Sunday afternoon and asked her roommate to bring her lunch to her room but when the latter showed up she found the room locked from inside, said Negi, adding the college management was informed when Sanmeet failed to open the door.

Later, police reached the spot and broke open the door and found the girl hanging from the ceiling fan.

The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem, said the official.

This is the fourth case of suicide in this college over the past few years. In 2008, two students had committed suicide in separate incidents in the college campus.

On December 14, 2008, a third-year student Navjot Kaur Khokhar, a resident of Amritsar, committed suicide.

On April 14, 2008, 20-year-old Krishna Negi, hailing from Shimla, committed suicide, following which a case was registered against 11 employees, teachers and students of the college under sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (action by several persons in furtherance of common intentions) of IPC.

Another student from Dharamsala, Ishita Sharma, allegedly committed suicide about four years back.
