Delhi man arrested for running inter-state extortion racket

New Delhi: A young man was arrested in the National Capital for allegedly running an inter-state extortion racket in the garb of a cargo company, police said on Tuesday.

Twenty nine-year-old Manoj Kumar was apprehended from Nangloi on September 11, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Chhaya Sharma said.

"He used to open a fake transport company and give wide publicity so that people come to get their cargo booked for transporting the same through trucks to different parts of the country," she said.

The gang led by Kumar, then used to select their soft target from the bookings and then would hide the booked goods at some place instead of delivering the same to the mentioned destination, she added.

Manoj would then allegedly threaten the victim by using his muscle power to extort a good amount of money for the release of goods.

"The gang always made sure that the amount demanded would be very less than the actual value of the goods of the victims, which was generally in lakhs. In order to avoid police intervention, they kept on changing their office to other states under different names," Sharma said.

Manoj told the police that he was previously involved in a large number of criminal cases of murder, cheating and thefts in Hisaar and other parts of Haryana.

The arrest came following investigations into a complaint by one Gopal Krishan.
