Chembur man abducts child, demands wife in ransom; held

Mumbai: A thirty-year-old man has been arrested by officers of the RCF police station in Chembur for abducting a one-and-a-half-year-old child from her residence and threatening her mother with dire consequences if she did not marry him.

The child's father, Uma Shankar Narayan Gatta, 33, approached the RCF police on Friday to register a complaint against Ashraf Madar Shaikh, alleging that he had kidnapped his daughter Divika alias Disha from their home.

According to Gatta's statement, the incident took place at around 2.30pm on September 30 in Sai Nath cooperative housing society in Vashi Naka, Chembur, when Shaikh took Disha away without his or his wife Muskan's knowledge, and did not return.Assistant commissioner of police (Trombay division)

Jalinder Khandagle, said, "Shaikh was a friend of Gatta and his wife Muskan and visited them often as he was staying nearby. When we received the complaint, we alerted the mobile phone service provider and started tracking his number, which was traced to Uttar Pradesh."

A day later, Shaikh called Muskan and told her that he won't return Disha unless she marries him. Muskan pleaded Shaikh that she was a married woman and hence could not heed his demand, but Shaikh refused to give in.

The police officials asked Muskan to keep talking to Shaikh to ensure that he does not change his mobile number or switch off the phone. During one call, Shaikh asked Muskan to meet him alone at Kanpur railway station. On police's advice, she agreed.

A special police team accompanied Muskan to Kanpur dressed in plain clothes. When the team alighted at Kanpur on Sunday, Muskan contacted Shaikh, who was arrested when he arrived at the station.

Shaikh had kept Disha at a house in Machaaria village near Kanpur from where she was rescued and returned to her parents.

Sheikh was brought to Mumbai on Tuesday and has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
