Bomb threat to flight; security beefed up at Kochi airport

Chennai: The Kochi airport has been put on red alert from 4pm today to 10 am tomorrow. The alert has been issued after an anonymous call received at Chennai airport about explosives on board a Chennai-Kochi flight.

Bomb and dog squads have been pressed into service, and officials are conducting additional checks on passengers and cargo.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) will review the situation at Kochi airport once again tomorrow morning before calling off the alert.

Visitors' entry to the airport was banned today following a direction from Union Home Ministry as part of security measures taken in view of the Independence Day.

In a recent incident of security lapse, low intensity explosive chemical was recovered from Kochi airport when smoke emanated from the consignment.
