Argument over admissions ends in family tragedy

New Delhi: Argument over which school to choose for their child led to the death of a man and his two kids in West Delhi while the wife survived a suicide bid, police said on Tuesday.

Police have registered a case of murder against the woman for allegedly smothering her children after the husband committed suicide and she consumed poison on March 19 in Tilak Nagar. The woman was placed under arrest.

Pramod (35), a Delhi Jal Board employee, and two children - Jia (2) and Jatin (aged 7 months) - died in the incident while Sonali (33) survived the suicide bid.

According to the statement she gave to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), the couple had an argument over which school to choose for their child. While Sonali wanted to get an admission for their child in a private school, Pramod said it was not feasible because of their financial condition.

On this, there was a big argument. Later in the night, Sonali said, she saw Pramod writhing in pain after he allegedly consumed poison. She then smothered her two children and consumed poison.

"She presumed that her husband had committed suicide and lost control of herself. She then smothered both her children. Before consuming sleeping pills, she wrote a suicide note in which she said they are taking their children along as they would not be able to survive without them," a senior police official said.
