Ajmer's Anasagar Lake threatens to overflow after heavy rains

Ajmer: The Anasagar Lake in Ajmer, Rajasthan is threatening to flood parts of the city after heavy rains since Monday has filled it up. The water level at the lake, situated at the centre of the city, has already reached its full capacity of 13 feet. Several low-lying parts of the city in the catchment area will be flooded if the sluice gates are opened in case rains continue.

Heavy rains since Monday has claimed at least five lives in Ajmer district. Three persons, including a four-year-old girl, were killed when a portion of their house collapsed in near Delhi Gate under Ganj area of the city. Lightening struck five people working in a farm in Sanwar area, leaving an elderly woman dead. In a similar incident, an 18-year-old boy drowned in a swollen pond in Chiliyabad village in the district.

The district administration is preparing for the worst as the lake has begun to overflow around 150 cusecs of water. Ajmer's District Collector Vaibhav Galaria said, "We have experienced heavy rains for the two days. The escape channels in the lake are also flooded. We are trying to see that the overflow is not obstructed." He said local authorities are taking necessary precautions to clear the obstructions before the administration decides to open the gates.

The Met office has predicted more rains in the region today. The South-West monsoon remained active in the state with most of the places in Ajmer and Udaipur divisions, many areas in Jaipur and Jodhpur and isolated pockets in rest of the divisions, receiving light to moderate rains.
