The Ahmedabad Municipal (AMC) Corporation carried out a major sealing and demolition campaign in all six zones of the city. The estate department of the corporation sealed more than 300 commercial establishments which did not follow norms of building constructions as well as fire safety.
The estate department of west zone of Ahmedabad targeted three commercial complexes on CG Road. It sealed 17 shops in Navneet Plaza and Om Complex that were built illegally on parking space.
Moreover, the department also sealed 82 shops located in Agrawal Complex as the owners have not followed norms of fire safety.
The civic body also sealed 82 shops built in the parking space of Gopal Tower near Maninagar railway station. The issue of these shops was discussed many times in the civic body, but implementation was put on hold for uncertain reasons, probably due to political pressure.
It should be noted that the civic body had issued notices to all the high rise building that did not fulfil fire safety system requirements. However, only 13 such buildings have installed the system and applied for getting certificate from the fire and emergency department of AMC.
Jagdish Vadhwani, owner of Sai Boutique, said that he has been doing business on CG Road for nearly 18 years. "We have started installation of fire safety system in our complex and expect it to be completed within a couple of days," he said. He also said businessmen would have to incur losses but the consolation was that the AMC authorities have promised to remove the seal when the no-objection certificate would be obtained from the fire and emergency department.
The civic body also sealed 30 shops in Kalasagar Complex and the entire four floors of Surohi Building in Thakkarnagar area. Similarly, the department sealed 60 commercial establishments in Abhishek Complex in Khanpur and Madhupura Ganj Bazaar. It also demolished a godown built in the cellar of Sumeru Complex, which was originally meant for parking purpose.
The estate department also sealed 35 industrial sheds of Tirth Estate in phase-IV of Vatwa GIDC area.
