Accused dies in police custody, 4 cops suspended

Ujjain: A 65-year-old man, who had been held by police last night for an inquiry into a gambling racket allegedly run by him, died today at a hospital here while in custody, after which four cops were suspended.

According to police, the deceased, identified as Wahid Khan, was apprehended last night and brought to Mahakal police station from Begumbagh Colony for an inquiry into the gambling racket.

However, while being in custody, Khan complained of chest pain and was taken to the hospital where he died.

Following his death, a group of people gathered at the police station as well as at the hospital and stopped police from taking away the body and also demanded immediate arrest of the policemen involved in the incident.

Inspector General (IG) Ujjain range Upendra Jain has ordered suspension of four policemen in this connection. They were sub-inspector Abhishek Gautam and head constables Chandrapal Singh, Indrapal Singh and Man Singh.

A magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident, sources said.
