A speeding BEST ran over a 50-year-old woman and injured one of her relatives while they were crossing the road at Cheetah Gate, Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Sunday.

While Hemangi Warangkar was declared dead before arrival, Reshma Murudkar, who sustained serious injuries is said to be critical. To make matters worse, jewellery worth Rs 50,000, which the deceased was wearing, was allegedly stolen on the premises of St George's Hospital, where her body was sent for a post-mortem.

Wangankar's kin got into an altercation with hospital authorities. They claimed that the police did not take any action. This resulted in the body being sent for the post-mortem only by midnight.

The woman's relative also alleged that the hospital authorities were reluctant to treat Murudkar, and sent her to J J Hospital instead.

According to one of Wangankar's kin, the women were crossing the road to hire a taxi when the BEST bus suddenly appeared.  "They waved to the driver to stop, but it was too late," said an eyewitness.
