2 killed in police firing during raid on bootleggers

Ahmedabad: Two persons including a girl were killed in police firing and seven others were injured during clashes when the police raided an alleged den of bootleggers in Harij town of Patan district here on Wednesday.

The incident took place when police raided a place owned by Arvind Thakore and Manuji Thakore in Hatdapara area outside Harij town, they said.

Patan DSP A S Ghelot said people in the locality hurled stones at policemen after local crime branch raided the area and seized 7 to 8 boxes of country-made liquor.

"Since the area is very congested, the policemen were surrounded by over 150 people who attacked them with sharp weapons and sticks," Ghelot said.

"Even the women members of the bootleggers' family attacked policemen, injuring half a dozen of them," he said.

Police fired two shots in the air to disperse the mob as it refused to budge after lathicharge, Ghelot said.

"Four shots were fired at the crowd, as the situation became out of control," he said.

"Manuji and his daughter Jigiben (16) who were among the attackers received bullet injuries in the stomach and later died, while one other was injured," Ghelot added.

TheDSP said Jigiben had attacked one of the policemen with a sharp weapon and hithim on the head.

 

"Allthe policemen and one bootlegger injured in the firing have been admitted tohospital and are undergoing treatment," Ghelot said.

 

Thepolice have increased vigil throughout the state and has been raiding den ofbootleggers after the hooch tragedy in the state in which more than 130 peopledied in July this year.
