With Rivers Overflowing, Drainage Not Working: Chennai Corporation Chief
New Delhi/Chennai: With rivers in and around Chennai - Adyar and Cooum - flowing at danger levels, the city's drainage system has stopped working, Chennai Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kapur told NDTV.

Speaking on the current situation in the rain-hit metropolis, Mr Kapur said the main thoroughfares in the city have been cleared. Over nine lakh food packets were distributed to people stranded at different points in the water-logged areas, he said.

There have been reports from all over the city about people stranded, buildings including homes, offices and hospitals flooded.

"If this kind of rain happens again then we are in for a tough time," Mr Kapur said. The Met department has predicted more rain over the next three days. The next 48 hours, it has cautioned, will be crucial.

"None of the drains can work with such heavy rain," the Corporation chief said, over the phone on Wednesday evening. "A large amount of water is still flowing into many areas," he cautioned.
