Officials recover 20 kg gold from aircraft, five arrested

Chennai: Twenty kg of gold biscuits, worth Rs 7 crore in the international market, were today recovered from the lavatory of an Air India flight and five persons were arrested in this connection, airport sources said.

Based on a tip-off, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials took into custody for questioning Mohammad Mustafa, a native of Kerala, who arrived in Chennai by a flight from Dubai around 5 am.

Investigations revealed that he had hidden the gold biscuits in the lavatory of the plane. He was travelling from Dubai and two of his accomplices who were waiting in Chennai to board the same flight on its second leg to Delhi were to pick them up.

The two persons waiting with boarding passes and another two accomplices outside the air terminus were arrested, they said.
