Chennai: Built in 1516 the Luz Church in Chennai celebrates its 500th year from August 6th to August 15th. 'Luz' which means lights in Portuguese, this church is one of the heritage landmarks in the city.

It is believed that the church was built by a group of Franciscan missionaries who lost their way in the sea. A ray of light then guided them towards the shore and they stopped at Malapore, which was then covered with forests.  The church was built at that very spot out of gratitude.

The T shaped church has some beautiful art work covering it's altar and ceiling. The church is also a home for some old tablets, one of them with Aramaic inscription, the language Jesus spoke.

The religious and social events are to continue for a week, which has drawn devotees and clerics from Rome as well.

"The church brings together people of all faiths. It's a source of peace and harmony" says Reverent Dr Peter Thumma, Rector and the Parish Priest.

This landmark heritage is to undergo renovation soon. Church authorities along with IIT Madras will take up strong and effective methods to preserve the church which is a world heritage site.

The congregation members are very proud about their church. Virginia Sunderraja a senior member said "We get such peace in this church. There used to be a pulpit on the right side in the front. Would be great if it is restored ". Chandra Shekhar another member added "We are so happy to be members of this old church".
