Chennai Building Collapse: Number of Dead Rises to 50

Rescue efforts are going on at the site of the building collapse.

Chennai: The number of dead in the collapse of an under-construction building in Chennai has risen to 50 and 27 persons have so far been rescued alive.

"As of now, the total number of dead are 50 and the rescue effort is going on," said a senior official of the Tamil Nadu government, who is coordinating rescue efforts.

Meanwhile, 14 bodies lying in the morgue are yet to be identified, said Dr Anand Pratap, Resident Medical Officer of the Government Royapettah Hospital.

So far, from GRH, 29 bodies have been handed over to the next of the kin of victims. Of these, five belonged to Odisha, 14 from Andhra Pradesh and 10 from Tamil Nadu.

A total of 74 persons have so far been pulled out of the debris since June 28 when the mishap occurred.

More people are feared trapped under the debris.

Rescue work is continuing in full swing.
