Telangana bandh call given by TRS leaders evokes partial response

Hyderabad: The Telangana bandh call given by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi or TRS has received a mixed response in the region. The TRS has called the shutdown to protest against the arrest of hundreds of its party workers during the "chalo assembly" march yesterday.

Here are the latest developments in the story:

  1. Normal life has been affected only in those districts of the region where TRS presence is strong. Most educational institutions, commercial establishments, malls and cinema theatres in these districts are closed.

  2. In other districts including Hyderabad, there isn't much impact of the bandh. Most buses are plying in the city and traffic is fairly normal. While some shops are closed, schools and colleges are open.

  3. Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is running partial services in the region. Its city services in twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad are running as usual but some of the buses leaving for Telangana districts have been cancelled due to lack of passengers.

  4. All trains in the region are running as per schedule, the South Central Railway has asid. The services of the  MMTS (local) trains in Hyderabad, which were cancelled  yesterday following the "chalo assembly" stir, have resumed today.

  5. There is heavy police deployment in many parts of the region to check any untoward incident.

  6. Pro-Telangana parties' march to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, called to press for the demand for separate state of Telanagana, was foiled yesterday by the police who took into preventive custody around 1400 activists, including senior leaders of TRS and BJP, and blocked all roads leading to the legislature building.

  7. TRS alleges that the police resorted to repressive measures during the 'chalo assembly' march.

  8. CPI, a strong supporter of separate Telangana state, however, is not supporting the bandh and described the TRS decision as unilateral.

  9. 3.5 crore people out of Andhra Pradesh's population of 8 crore reside in Telangana, comprising 10 districts including Hyderabad.

  10. The demand for separate statehood of Telangana is over four decades old.
