Must De-link Religion From Terrorism, Says PM Modi In Brussels

Brussels: Underlining that terrorism needs to be de-linked from religion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon the United Nations to address the problem in his address to the Indian community in Brussels, struck by multiple explosions last week.

Here are latest developments:

  1. Addressing the Indian community, PM Modi said "terror must be de-linked from religion." He said he had met leaders of EU through the day. "We talked on many things but terrorism was the focal point of all discussions."

  2. "At this time, the world says in once voice - World Bank, IMF, ratings agencies - they all say if there is a ray of hope in the world, it is India," PM Modi said as he went on to list his government's achievements in 2015.

  3. NRIs investing in India will get the same benefits as resident Indians investing here, PM Modi told the Indian community in his address that lasted over an hour.

  4. Earlier, PM Modi had remotely launched India's biggest optical telescope ARIES in Nainital, made with Indian-Belgian cooperation, from Brussels.

  5. In his meeting with Belgian CEOs, he showcased India as a promising destination for business. "Told Belgian CEOs -come explore opportunities in India...they are even more solid and sustaining than diamonds," Mr Modi tweeted hours later.

  6. PM Modi laid a wreath at the Maelbeek Metro Station, where a suicide bomber blew himself up on a train last Tuesday. Infosys employee Raghavendran Ganesan, was killed in that explosion.

  7. The Prime Minister had said on Mr Ganesan: "A young life, full of hope and promise cut short by mindless violence."

  8. At least 32 people were killed and over 300 were injured after two bombs exploded at the Brussels airport and one went off at the Maelbeek metro station in the Belgian city on March 22.

  9. The prime minister also held meetings with leaders of the Hindu forum Europe and Hindu Forum Belgium.

  10. PM Modi visited Brussels for the 13th India-European Union (EU) summit that will deliberate on ways to finalise a free trade agreement. The last Summit had taken place in 2012. He said the summit "will advance multifaceted engagement across a whole range of sectors" and described the 27-member bloc as a vital trading partner.
