Delhi School Let One Student Drown, Risked Another's Life: Inquiry

Divyansh Kakrora drowned in a water tank at a private school in Delhi.

New Delhi: A week after an six-year-old child Divyansh Kakrora drowned in a water tank at Ryan International School in Delhi, an inquiry has indicted the school for "deliberate campaign of misinformation" and "gross criminal negligence". The inquiry also speaks of a class XI student at the same school who jumped into the same water tank to pull out the young boy while school staff did nothing at all. The inquiry was conducted by a sub-divisional magistrate whose report makes the following points:

  • "The school completely failed in its responsibility to take proper care of the students. 30 January 2015 was holiday but school called small kids for poetry competition. Hence, they should have been extra vigilant."
  • "Class teacher failed to notice absence of the student for hours. She could not even figure out the proper time of missing child."
  • "When body of Divyansh was spotted, none of the school authorities responded.  Swimming coach, teachers, game instructor, gardeners were available but none responded.
  • "In absence of the XI class student, possible, body of the child could not have been rescued. "
  • "Letting a 11th class student to go inside the pump house or water tank in front of all school authorities, was very serious lapse. His life was at risk."
  • "This complete lack of any moral or common sense must not be condoned. Allowing another student to go inside the water tank was very dangerous move allowed by school authorities as according to their statement no one is aware of the actual depth, actual water stored and other necessary details about the tank room."
  • "Most importantly, the time that elapsed due to deliberate inaction by the school staff in rescuing Divyansh amounts to gross criminal negligence. "
  • "Had the time essentially wasted in discussion, calling for a particular person and denial, been utilized in rescuing the drowned child it would have been pivotal in resuscitating the child and saving his life."
  • "It also serves as a paramount lesson for the Government and all the agencies involved, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children."
