'If I Am a Devil, PM is a Demon': Lalu Prasad Hits Back

Lalu Prasad Yadav has hit out at PM Modi for 'shaitaan' remarks

Patna: Stung by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Shaitaan (devil)" jibes in election rallies in Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav today came up with a bigger "evil" for his comeback.

"I exposed their attempt to stop reservation for the backward castes, so he called me a devil. He is a Brahm Pishach (super demon)," Lalu Prasad told NDTV on Friday as he campaigned for state polls starting Monday.

The PM's response came instantly at a rally today. "Every morning he takes out a new abuse from the dictionary to call Modi," he said.

On Thursday, he addressed four rallies and the Rashtriya Janata Dal chief was his target in each.

Mr Prasad has been skewered by the BJP over his "Hindus also eat beef" remarks last week, in the aftermath of the mob killing of a Muslim man in Uttar Pradesh's Dadri over rumours that he had eaten beef. He had later clarified, saying "it was a shaitan who put words in my mouth. I said eating beef can cause diseases."

PM Modi said: "The Yaduvanshis gave India the white revolution and made Gujarat the centre of it. But here, a neta (leader) of the Yadavs ate it. Lalu ji, elections come and go, but please remember these people of yaduvansh were with you.  Lalu ji, you have made serious allegations about what yasuvanshis eat. When young people got angry at his words, he said that the devil had entered him. I want to know why the shaitan (devil) chose him."

"Yaduvanshi" describes descendants of Krishna, who was a cowherd in Hindu mythology.

"He called me shaitan...he insulted me. I am a Yaduvanshi, born to a backward caste family but gave voice to the poor. He ( Modi)  is a Brahm Pishach and I know who to deal with such people," Lalu Prasad, a former chief minister, bit back.

Mr Prasad is part of the grand anti-BJP alliance led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He has alleged that the BJP is trying to stir trouble in Bihar to polarize voters ahead of the polls.
