Deployed as a home guard for the last 19 years, Benudhar earns around Rs 6,600 as a monthly salary and has a family of five to look after.

Bhubaneswar: For a policeman, Benudhar Sahu has a curious claim to fame. The 39-year old Home Guard with the Odisha Police is known as the dancing cop of Bhubaneswar.

Known for his unique style of controlling traffic, Benudhar dances his way while controlling the traffic. His swift hand gestures and continuous whistling has made him the center of attraction.

Posted at one of the busiest intersections in the city, Benudhar's high 'speed signal technique', has made him the favourite cop in the city.

"There is always a sense of fear associated with police. But, Benudhar is friendly to everyone. Often, people stop by to inquire about his health and some even offer him gifts. But he works with utmost dedication. All traffic cops should be like him," says Sachikanta Jena, who regularly uses the stretch in which Benudhar is posted.

Deployed as a home guard for the last 19 years, Benudhar earns around Rs 6,600 as a monthly salary and has a family of five to look after. But financial constraints fail to deter the ever-smiling cop. His liveliness and energy has mesmerized commuters.

"I perform this 'high speed signal' to make people happy. Moving hands at a fast pace makes me tired but I am happy to serve the people," Benudhar says.

Benudhar's movements and finesse have not only attracted the people but also inspired his colleagues, who often try to imitate him.

"People usually don't pay heed to my instructions, but Benu's instructions are followed by everyone. Like there are celebrities in cinema, Benudhar is the celebrity in the traffic department," says his colleague Sukanata Kumar Pradhan.
