Jail for three more men in Kandhamal riots case

Phulbani, Orissa: A fast track court in Orissa's Kandhamal district today sentenced three people to rigorous imprisonment for three years for their involvement in rioting and arson in Gudurukia village in the communally sensitive district of Kandhamal on December 26, 2007.

Addition Session Judge Sobhan Kunar Das sentenced the trio to rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 1,000 each.

The violence had its genesis in the attack and pelting of stones on Christmas revelers at Barakhama in the district on December 25, 2007.

The incident had evoked large scale protest and spread to other parts of the tribal-dominated district in which three persons died.

In December, 2010, 15 people had been sentenced to a similar prison term and fine.

In April 2010, a special fast track court in Phulbani had convicted 105 people in the case. Ten people were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
