Woman researcher attempts suicide over sexual harassment

Bangalore: A woman researcher in Mysore University has accused her guide of sexual harassment and attempted to commit suicide, Karnataka Police said on Monday.

The scholar, a married woman, is now recovering in a private hospital in Mysore, about 140 km from Bangalore, and the state chief secretary has been asked to probe the charges.

"Chief Secretary S.V. Ranganath will hold the enquiry and submit a report at the earliest," Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa told reporters in Bangalore.

The university, founded in 1916, is also conducting a probe into the charges though the professor and research guide had denied them, Vice Chancellor V.G. Talawar told reporters in Mysore.

The woman consumed an overdose of sleeping pills on March 5 after leaving a suicide note accusing the professor of sexual harassment.

She was admitted to a private hospital by her husband.
