This Two-Year-Old Needs a Bone Marrow Transplant to Live

Arisha Imtiaz

Bengaluru:

Arisha Imtiaz is only two years old but she has already undergone a heart surgery. She suffers from an uncommon disorder called Red Cell Aplasia, and now she needs a bone marrow transplant. That procedure will cost a massive Rs 30 lakh, money that her family says they don't have.

Arisha and her family members will have to frequently travel from Odisha's Cuttack to Bengaluru's Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital for treatment.

Though she still has bandages from a recent procedure of bone marrow harvesting that she underwent, Arisha seemed to be mightily comforted by some bars of chocolate.

"The doctor gave us an estimate of Rs 30 lakh (for the transplant). We are from a middle-class family and we cannot afford that, so I request you people, who are reading this, to please help us. Please save my daughter's life," said Arisha's mother Amreen Akhtar.

Her family says they have already approached ministers, politicians and even some film stars for help. But not much help has come forth, they say.

Amreen's sister, Afreen Akhtar, has been travelling with the family and helping them make travel and treatment arrangements.

"I went to Delhi and met (AAP chief) Arvind Kejriwal and he told me that right now, I'm not in a position to help your child. But he wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking help for Arisha," said Afreen, showing NDTV a letter that, she says, the AAP chief wrote to the PM.

This family has not yet let go of hope; they are still hopeful about raising the money needed to let this little girl get the bone marrow transplant she needs for a new lease of life.
