Bangalore:
A young couple facing their parents' disapproval of their relationship committed suicide within hours of each other yesterday.
Bhargavi (19), a first semester student, and Shivakumar Naik (22), a final semester student, were both studying at the Nalini Raghunath Degree College in the city, but had known each other since Pre University College.
Recently, Bhargavi's parents arranged her marriage to another person, and the tentative date for the wedding was set for March 13. Bhargavi attended college yesterday morning, but soon fell unconscious on campus. Her friends took her to a nearby hospital where she told doctors that she had consumed sleeping tablets around 9 am.
She was later shifted to Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital for further treatment, but was pronounced dead shortly after. Shivakumar was in college when he heard of Bhargavi's death, following which he immediately went home and hanged himself around 12.20 pm. A complaint has been registered at Bannerghatta police station, and the police are investigating.
