Bangalore:
To promote use of Kannada in Bangalore, where majority of the people are not native
speakers, a 'Kannada Chariot' will embark on a seven-day journey across the city from January 15.
The programme is the brainchild of Kannada Development Authority, the watchdog for ensuring implementation of Kannada as an official language.
"Bangalore has about 68 per cent of non-Kannada speaking people. There is a dire need to promote use of the language in the city. We want to create awareness on the issue among Kannadigas as well as non-Kannada speaking population," Authority Chairman Mukyamantri Chandru told reporters here.
Litterateurs, artists and other prominent personalities would travel in the chariot that would visit at least four Assembly constituencies daily, he said. Bangalore has 28 assembly segments.
G Venkatasubbaiah, the author of Kannada lexicon, and renowned poet G S Shivarudrappa will pilot the chariot, which would be flagged off by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.
