Insurgents attack Congress offices and candidates

Imphal: Insurgents planted a bomb at the Manipur Congress office besides lobbing grenades at the house of Congress party candidates and supporters at many places in the state, police said on Monday.

The insurgents had planted the bomb here late last night but there was no report of any casualty, the sources said.

Insurgents also hurled grenades at the house of Congress candidates and supporters in four valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishenpur and Thoubal district last night but there was no report of any casualty, they said.

Insurgents had hurled grenades at the house of Congress candidates, Ng Bijoy (Khurai) in Imphal East district, at a house of party candidate O Landhobini at Khangabok in Thoubal district, supporter of party candidate at Shingjamei in Imphal West district, I Hemochandra and many other places elsewhere, the sources said.

Seven major insurgent organisations - the coordination committee(CorCom) of insurgent outfits comprising United National  Liberation Front, Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup, People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), PREPAK (PROGRESSIVE), United People's Party of kangleipak, Kangleipak Communist Party and Revolutionary People's Front had said they would oppose the Congress candidates in the forthcoming January 28 assembly election because they were against what they called 'revolutionary movement'.

Election office sources here said the poll body was concerned over the "interference" of insurgents in the democratic process in the forthcoming elections in Manipur.

They said all attempts would be made to prevent disturbances and interference in the forthcoming polls on January 28 during which more than 360 companies of Central forces including 280 paramilitary forces would be used in addition to state armed police and security forces at more than 2700 polling stations in the one-day poll.

Candidates in the hill districts would be allowed to file their nomination papers both at the hill district headquarters and state capital Imphal, the sources said.

Heavy security and police security guards would be provided to all of them the moment they file the nomination papers.

The last date of filing nomination papers has been fixed on January 11 next and scrutiny of papers on January 12, sources said, adding police poll observers, not below the rank of deputy inspector general of police, would arrive here on Tuesday and be posed at all nine district headquarters.

Officials belonging to Income Tax departments have already arrived in Manipur to check the poll expenditures of each candidate - both in the valley and hill districts.

The sources in the political parties said they would announce the list of candidates in the next one or two days.

The threat from insurgents was not taken seriously because people wanted to vote a popular government, they said.
