Assembly elections: What's at stake today

New Delhi: Maharashtra today votes for 288 Assembly seats. The Congress-NCP alliance here is looking for its third term in office. The elections are being held in the shadow of Naxal violence. Last week, the state watched its worst ever Naxal attack unfold in Gadchiroli in North Eastern Maharashtra. 18 policemen were killed by 200 Naxals. 18,000 central police forces are on guard. Mumbai offices have given the day off to encourage people to vote. In the recent Lok Sabha elections in May, the city's turnout was disastrous.

Haryana is voting for 90 Assembly seats. The Congress is looking to be re-elected for its second consecutive term. The Hooda government here asked for the polls to be advanced by seven months. The Congress here did extremely well in the Lok Sabha elections in May, winning a whopping 9 out of 10 seats.

Arunachal Pradesh is voting for 60 Assembly seats. The ruling Congress is contesting all seats. Three Congress candidates including Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu has been elected unopposed.
