Wheelchair flung from travelator, carer does not let go

China: Security cameras in a Chinese departmental store caught a  terrifying experience for  a customer in a wheelchair, and her carer.

The Customer service staff of the store were shocked to see an out-of-control wheelchair plunging towards them down a steeply inclined travelator.  Astonishingly, the carer was hanging desperately from the wheelchair's handles.

The carer suffered serious multiple head injuries, but probably managed to slow down the wheelchair enough to ensure that her patient was not badly injured.

Travelators are designed to automatically brake specialised shopping carts used by the store, but do not slow other wheeled devices, such as wheelchairs and pushchairs that customers may bring in.

Store managers have now installed signs warning customers not to bring such devices onto the travelator.
