United Nations:
The United Nations says violence against humanitarian workers soared to a record high last year - and already this year more aid workers have killed than in all of 2012.
According to research from the Aid Worker Security Database cited by the U.N., 460 aid workers were victims of attacks in 2013, a 66 percent increase from the 277 attacks in 2012.
Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said attacks on humanitarian workers are part of "a picture of brutalization which we see in the world today" and "regretfully this trend is getting worse." He spoke at a U.N. Security Council meeting Tuesday to mark World Humanitarian Day.
According to the Database, three-quarters of the attacks took place in just five countries: Afghanistan, Syria, South Sudan, Pakistan and Sudan.
