Turkey's ruling party is holding a congress to confirm Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu as its new chairman and prime minister-designate, to replace president-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Erdogan, who is scheduled to be sworn in as president on Thursday, hand-picked his stalwart ally Davutoglu to succeed him. Davutoglu, 55, on Wednesday is standing unopposed for party chairman.
Erdogan, who has dominated Turkish politics for over a decade, is widely expected to continue to run the country from behind the scenes. Although the office of president is largely ceremonial, he has said he will use its dormant powers, such as summoning and presiding over Cabinet meetings.
Davutoglu has steered Turkish foreign policy as Erdogan's chief adviser since 2003 and as foreign minister since 2009.
