Pilot Killed in Finland Plane Crash

Helsinki: A light aircraft, with no passenger onboard, crashed in the sea near Finland on Saturday, killing the pilot, a media report said.

Soon after the accident was reported, divers freed the pilot from the partly submerged plane, but they were unable to revive him, Xinhua reported.

The crashed plane was found severely damaged. It was flying from Tampere to the capital region when it crashed, rescuers said.

The accident site was located about 500 metres from the Toppelund beach in Espoo, a satellite city of Helsinki.

The cause of the crash was being probed.

Ismo Aaltonen, director of the Western Uusimaa Rescue Department of Finland, said the aircraft was an ultra-light model, which can be put in water if necessary, Xinhua quoted Helsingin Sanomat daily as saying.
