Britain's only polar bears were introduced to each other for the first time on Friday, broadcaster Sky News reported.
Elderly polar bear, Mercedes, will share her four acre enclosure at the Highland Wildlife Park in Scotland, with Walker, a 23 month old bear from a Dutch zoo Sky said.
The pair will keep each other company but are not expected to mate.
The polar bears spent a week separated by a wire mesh fence before they were united on Friday.
They bared sharp teeth and roared at each other before getting used to each other's company.
Zoo officials plan to keep Mercedes with Walker until the elderly polar bear dies, after which time another female polar bear will be brought to the UK to breed with him.
