Brussels, Belgium:
The European Union is imposing sanctions on two South Sudanese military leaders accused of obstructing the country's peace process.
The EU said in a statement Thursday it is forbidding the pair from traveling to the 28-nation bloc and is freezing their assets because of their role in violating a cease-fire signed earlier this year.
The names of the targeted military leaders weren't immediately released pending their publication in the EU's legal journal Friday.
The bloc said the action was part of wider efforts to stop violence in the world's newest nation.
South Sudan, which celebrated its third independence anniversary on Wednesday, has seen sporadic fighting between President Salva Kiir's army and rebels loyal to the former vice president, Riek Machar.
