Crowded Bus Veers Off Road in Nepal, Killing 23

Kathmandu: Police says a bus crowded with holiday travelers veered off a mountain road in Nepal, killing at least 23 and injuring many more.

Police official Dan Bahadur Karki said the bus rolled about 300 meters (980 feet) from the road near Chatiwan village before the wreckage got stuck on trees.

Rescuers were trying to help the injured and pull out the bodies, but the wreckage was on a slope and it was difficult for them to reach.

The bus was carrying nearly 100 people because Nepal is celebrating the two-week Dasain festival where people head home to celebrate with families.

Poor maintenance of roads and vehicles contributes to many accidents in mountainous Nepal.
