China Frees Artist Held for Tiananmen Anniversary

Beijing: A friend of dissident artist Chen Guang says he has been released more than a month after he was detained ahead of the 25th anniversary of the military crackdown on China's pro-democracy protests.

Artist consultant Melanie Wang said Saturday that Chen was freed, although he could not be immediately reached.

Chen's detention is believed to be connected to a private art performance remembering the bloody crackdown in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Beijing does not allow public discussions of the event and discourages private conversations about it.

Another artist, Guo Jian, also was taken into police custody before the anniversary. Guo is expected to be repatriated to Australia, where he is a citizen.
