Avalanche kills four army soldiers in north Pakistan

Islamabad: Four Pakistani army soldiers have been killed in an avalanche in the mountainous northern Gilgit Baltistan region, a grim reminder of the 2012 incident in Siachen that claimed the lives of 129 troops.

According to the military's media wing, 26 soldiers were hit by a huge avalanche last night in the area.

"Despite extreme weather hazard, 22 soldiers were evacuated through heroic efforts," the statement said, adding that four soldiers were killed.

The incident comes after an earlier avalanche hit a team of Polish climbers on Nanga Parbat mountain peak yesterday that swept them down and injured two of them.

In 2012, an avalanche on the Pakistan-occupied side of the Siachen glacier had killed 140 people, including 129 soldiers.
