Bangalore: Eighteen years after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was booked for allegedly having assets disproportionate to her known sources of income, a special court in Bangalore will pronounce its verdict in the case on September 27.

The court was scheduled to pronounce the verdict on September 20, but it has postponed the judgment by a week - to make foolproof security arrangements. Ms Jayalalithaa, who enjoys Z+ security, has to make a personal appearance during the hearing.

Ms Jayalalithaa has been accused of accumulating property worth Rs 66 crore. She had been booked along with her foster son Sudhakaran and her companion Sasikala Natarajan.

A few months after the FIR was filed in September 1996, the AIADMK chief was arrested. She had to spend a few days in jail.

Over the years, the case - filed by the Tamil Nadu Vigilance Department - went through innumerable delays, twists and turns following the filing of associated cases and petitions.

A key shift occurred in 2003, when the case had to be shifted to a special court in Bangalore following a Supreme Court order.

The order came after Anbazhagan, a leader of the Opposition DMK, filed a petition saying unbiased judicial proceedings were not possible in Tamil Nadu after Ms Jayalalithaa's return to power.
