Reports of new fire in hills near Tirumala temple

Fire personnel dousing the blazing fire at Tirumala forest in Tirupati on the second day on Wednesday.

Air Force helicopters are flying over the thick forests near the Tirumala temple to examine reports of new flames. A massive fire that, according to early estimates, has destroyed 5000 hectares and was believed extinguished last night.  

Authorities at the Tirupati temple, one of India's most popular shrines, stressed that the temple and pilgrims are safe.

The fire last evening was blazing six kilometres from the temple to Lord Balaji, which is built on the Tirumala Hills, 600 kms from Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

Army and navy officers are working with disaster management experts to gauge the extent of the fire, said sources.
