Over 60,000 migrant workers register with Kerala police

Thiruvananthapuram: A total of 63,200 labourers from other states have registered with police in Kerala as per the new guidelines issued by government, Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan told the state assembly today.

The registration had been made mandatory for migrant workers with a view to initiating certain welfare schemes and also to have a check on their whereabouts, Radhakrishnan said, replying to a submission on a criminal incident involving a migrant labourer moved by Aisha Potti (CPI-M).

Radhakrishnan said government would deal firmly with anybody, whether migrant workers or not, who indulged in criminal activities.

Referring to the incident raised by Aisha Potti, he said the man, who tried to abduct a teenaged schoolgirl in the city recently, had been arrested.

The man, identified as one Abdul Kalam hailed from West Bengal, was a migrant worker.According to the police report, Kalam was addicted to drugs and was in an inebriated state when the incident happened,he said.

Potti said the man tried to abduct the girl while she was returning home from school and she was saved due to timely intervention of local people.

The CPI-M member alleged that law and order under UDF rule had deteriorated and attacks against women and children were on the rise.
