Manipal student gang-rape: police release sketch of one of the three suspects

Manipal: The police in Manipal today released the sketch of a man who they say is one of the three suspects in the case of a young student's gang-rape.

The sketch has been made on the description given by the student who was gang-raped on Thursday night. She is currently recovering in a local hospital.

The 22-year-old's foot was fractured in the assault and there were injuries on her neck and hands.

She was on her way home from a late-night study session at the library at her college when she was grabbed by the group of men in an auto-rickshaw. They then drove her to a secluded spot nearby and gang-raped her, the police said, after which the woman was dropped back at her hostel.

Footage from closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras near the place where she was kidnapped is reportedly unclear.

SP Boralingaiah, a senior police official handling the investigation, told NDTV that four teams are verifying the ownership and other details of the town's 8,000 autos.

"We are working with university authorities to increase safety," he said, "more CCTVs are being installed."

"How can parents now send their daughters to study... As a woman, I really feel scared... I feel threatened," said a medical student, who was part of the protests.

Manipal, along the Karnataka coast, is home to at least 27 colleges and nearly 21,000 students from across the country.
