Jayalalithaa inaugurates 14 new colleges across Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today inaugurated 14 arts and sciences colleges across the state, allocating over Rs 122 crore towards various development works in these institutions.

She inaugurated the colleges through video-conferencing from the state Secretariat in an initiative part of her government's efforts to ensure delivery of world-class education services to the people of the state, an official release said.

The colleges located in districts including Tanjavur, Tirupur, Puthukottai, Cuddalore and Kancheepuram, would offer undergraduate Arts and Science courses in English and Tamil, Mathematics and Computer Science, and B Com, it said.

Over 420 teaching and non-teaching posts have been created in these institutions and Jayalalithaa has approved over Rs 122 crore for various activities including construction of buildings and other amenities, it added.

In a seperate function, Jayalalithaa launched the government's free bicycle scheme for the current academic year, being implemented at a cost of over Rs 212 crore and covering around 6.43 lakh school students.
