Hyderabad: A prisoner, working at a petrol pump near Chanchalguda Central Prison in Hyderabad, escaped with Rs 65,000 cash in the wee hours today, police said.

Syed Sajid, a convict in a case of abetment to suicide of his wife, had been working at the petrol pump for the past 15 days. He escaped at around 2.30 am with Rs 65,000 cash that was collected at the pump, Chanchalguda Jail Superintendent B Saidaiah said.

Sajid was shifted from Cherlapalli Jail to Chanchalguda Central Prison a fortnight back. Prisoners with good behaviour in prison and facing non-serious offences are employed at the petrol pump. He was due to be released in next eight months, Saidaiah said.

Chanchalguda Jail authorities lodged a complaint with Dabeerpura police in connection with the incident on charges of escape from judicial custody and theft, under relevant sections of IPC.

Two teams have been formed to nab the convict, he added.
