Human chain formed against Kerala's plan to build dam on River Siruvani

email

Coimbatore: Protesting Kerala's decision to build a check dam across Siruvani river in Attapady, over 1,000 activists of 30 different political parties and organisation on Monday formed a human chain in the city.

The agitators said the dam, besides reducing the drinking water source to Coimbatore, would reduce the inflow of water into Bhavani river, which would affect the irrigation needs in Coimabtore, Erode and Tirupur Districts.

Periyar Dravida Kazhakam General Secretary, K Ramkrishnan said the human chain was the first in the series of agitation to exert pressure on the neighbouring state, which once attempted to construct a check dam at Mukkali, to withdraw its plan on Attapady.

District leaders of all major political parties, barring AIADMK, Congress and BJP, were present at the human chain, police said.
