Heavy Rains Kill 30 People in Tamil Nadu

Raods damaged due to the incessant rains in Tamil Nadu.

Chennai: 30 people have been killed due to incessant rains in Tamil Nadu in the last 10 days. The state has received 204.5 mm rainfall in this period, which is 35 per cent more than the normal.

Slum dwellers and farmers have been the worst affected by heavy rainfall which has extensively damaged property, crops and cattle flock.

An approximate of 4765 kilometres of road has also been damaged.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Tuesday announced a compensation of Rs 250,000 each to the families of 30 people who have died due to recent rains.

Compensation will also be paid to those who lost their cattle and livestock (cow Rs 20,000, goat Rs 2,000 and hen Rs100), he said.

He said for those huts that were totally damaged, a compensation of Rs 5,000 would be paid and for those partly damaged, Rs 2,500.

According to the Chief Minister, officials have been ordered to send a report on crop damage after water recedes.

A sum of Rs 60 crore has been allocated for repairing the roads and bridges that were damaged in the rains.

Tamil Nadu is geared for inconsistent rainfall, which is expected till the end of the year.
